23rd-Nov-2009 05:03 pm - I'm back again.
I really hope that this isn't in the memories somewhere, because I did look, I promise you. I mentioned to my mum that I'd like to get a sewing machine for my birthday/christmas but she had no idea what to look for.

Thinking about it, nor do I. Are there specific things you look for in a sewing machine that are important for corsetry?
I can't afford to spend a lot of money. Would any of these options work do you think?

I haven't looked anywhere other than Wal-Mart yet, but I certainly will.

Thank you :)

House messy, need groceries, can't move. Can only sit and eat bread.
23rd-Nov-2009 01:49 am - Rusting Busk
Has anyone ever had a busk start rusting on them? I take good care of my corsets but just noticed that one of my older corsets has rust building up on the busk :( Is there anyway to remove this and stop it without ruining the corset? I'm really hoping I don't have to take it apart to replace the busk
23rd-Nov-2009 12:30 am - baby knitting
Does anyone here know how to knit baby wool longies? I have some gorgeous handspun christmas colored yarn that has been sitting here for a few months. I would love to see something done with it before the holidays =]
23rd-Nov-2009 12:03 am - Broken Busk?
I recently posted a picture of a corset I made for a friend of mine here: (http://community.livejournal.com/corsetmakers/1695792.html) and she wore it once and just told me when she went to unhook the busk, one of the hooks was gone?!!! Has anyone even heard of this happening ever? It is of course a brand new busk that I ordered from corsetmaking.com and I inserted it the same way I always do. I would never reuse an old busk or anything like that. I just can't imagine what would cause this to happen...a defect?
I've never had to deconstruct a corset and put in a whole new busk, but it looks like that's what I'll have to do. I haven't got the corset back yet, but I'll try and post photos once I have it.
22nd-Nov-2009 11:38 pm - Ripple blankets
My Mom started to make a ripple blanket for my cousin but after a few months it really aggravated the arthritis in her shoulder so she had to stop. She asked me to finish it and last winter I worked on it for a few weeks before I got sick of it. I just started working on it again since my cousin is going through a rough time right now and she has been asking for since last year. Never again! I'm calling this thing the widow maker. I have carpel tunnel and normally crocheting doesn't bother it too much but this blanket is killing me. It takes me an half hour to finish a row and I have to count the whole time or I'll mess it up. It's wide enough to fit a full sized bed and there is so much left to do on it.

If anyone has made this blanket how do you do it? I'll post pics of it whenever it's done because it is really pretty.

Hello, I'm not only new to this community but also to corsets in general.

I'm only 14 so I'm not into the whole "making my waist look excessively small" thing. I just have a fascination with all things from old time periods. As a young girl I always dreamed of being a rich girl in the 1800's and often feel like I've been plonked in the wrong time period. There's just something about an elegant dress and a corset that is really appealing to me.

I'm not going to lie, I'm not a great sewer. I've made a few things, but I don't yet have a sewing machine (Something I'm hoping to acquire for my birthday next month) but I'm really interested in making myself a basic corset. It may sound a little weird but I love the elegant feeling, like I'm from the past.. (I'm not creepy, I just love things from the past)

Since I'm new to this, I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. So If you don't mind bearing with me, I have a few questions I'd like answering.

What would be a basic, easy corset to try and sew ? I'm a kind of trial and error person, so I'd have no touble with working on this for a while

Pattens? Is there anyway to get them? Or would I have to buy/make my own?

How hard are they to make? I know this is kind of a hard question to answer, but I keep hearing about how experienced you have to be.

What materials do you generally use? Can you buy them from a fabric shop?

Are there any tutorials out there on making a corset?

Anything you can tell me about corsets would be really helpful. I'm sorry I know I sound like a such a newbie, but I'm really eager to learn :D

23rd-Nov-2009 10:17 am - Christmas Sale
Hey there.

Merry Xmas from Silk Orchid Corsetry.

As a thank you to my clients past and present I would like to offer a 10% discount on orders placed in between today and Christmas eve, a little gift to you.

I require a deposit to be paid before Christmas Eve for the order to be legitimate and the sooner paid the sooner I can start work on your new Corset.

I would just like to take a moment to point out however, that it would be unlikely that I would have all orders finished before New Years Eve, so if you were wanting something quickly please order straight away so I can get started.

Please email me at Cassi@silkorchid.com.au to discuss ideas and prices

Hi, you maybe normally know me as [info]delirium71 this is my business face LJ

I was holding back on these samples as I was hoping to take part in a Christmas shopping weekender locally. However the venue has gone into administration causing the event to be cancelled. So rather than them taking up space in my workroom I'm offering them for sale on my Etsy shop.

Neither corset has been worn, or even tried on. They were simply test samples.

22nd-Nov-2009 02:08 pm - Corset Noooooooob
Hello Corsetry, I am a noob seeking your guidance. For the past couple of weeks I have been scouring the internet in search of my perfect corset, but I have not yet been able to find it. I find this strange, because my corset is extremely simple. My corset is black, and has no frills, tassels, beads, bows, or lace. It is plain. It is also low cut in front, and has a low back. I have even drawn you a picture so you can see what is in my head:

Why is it that everything I find is decorative? I don't want decorations, because they would cause strange bumps under my fabric, or stick out. I just want a plain, functional corset. I'm certain that they exist, I just can't seem to find them!

Here's where I start to wonder, is it possible to get this corset for less than $100? Like I said, I'm a total noob, And in my seraching I've seen a wide price range for corsets, and personally, I'd like to spend as little as possible while still getting a functional piece.

So my question really is, what is the best place to find affordable, plain corsets? Or do any of you have a corset that you would sell me? My measurements are 40in bust, 33in underbust, 32in waist, 42in hips.

Thank you for reading my post, I will be very grateful for any information you can give me.
22nd-Nov-2009 10:43 am - Bone placement question...
See full size imageWhen making a corset with these seaming details, do you generally have the boning follow the seams, or do they still go vertically?

edit for more info

This is the draft.

and this is what it looks like on. I have the boning on the seamlines in the mockup...
She is a very straight no waist, no squish kinda girl...
22nd-Nov-2009 12:24 pm - Hi guys.
I have so many projects going on at once right now. But this is the first that I finished. Its a scarf for a friends birthday. I got the pattern from http://crochetme.com/patterns/zen-and-art-stash-diving . And I added twisted beaded fringe to make it a little bit more of my own. I like it a lot even though my sister tells me its too skinny. I hope she likes it as well :)
Tada! )Happy hookin!

21st-Nov-2009 06:20 pm - Border
I am making a very large single-stitch graph afghan of the Swedish flag for a Christmas present. It's been a beast of a project, but I'm in the home stretch.

I'd like to put a border around the edge. Because it's single stitch, 5.5mm, with worsted yarn, it's a very flat, slightly loose blanket.

I'm picturing a border that has some thickness to it - something you could reach down and grab and it would be substantial in your hand as you pull it up further on the bed. I want it to be as simple as possible so as not to distract from the design of the afghan itself.

I have been looking for a good pattern for this but am striking out - any suggestions?

I have also considered experimenting; something with a whole bunch of post stitches in a row, possibly.
21st-Nov-2009 12:50 pm - TINY HEADS
I need some hats for my younger siblings, something for an 8 year old head and a 10 year old head, it's getting really cold, really fast, up here in New York!
21st-Nov-2009 01:57 am - Oddball materials stories?
The recent discussions on what are proper materials started me thinking, what about times we've used improper materials and how did they work?

My story, I had a costume design for a one-shot character for a LARP event that included a corset, but I wasn't sure when the one-shot would be. I found out a short time before the actual event and so had to rush to finish it. Then my sewing machine started acting up when I tried to sew in the boning channels, and in frustration I grabbed up a roll of ducktape and taped all the boning in place. It held just fine for the event, and otherwise I would have had to scrap that part of the costume. I wouldn't consider it for longer than one wearing, but I was very glad it worked!

Another experiment is I had a roll of mesh cloth I bought for use working on reptile cages, and lots of it left over after my project was done. So I thought I'd see how it worked for a mesh corset. Sadly the first time I tried to test-lace it, the mesh ripped along the channels, so that was a failure.

So I want to hear about oddball materials and the stories behind them. Have you ever cut up something like a tablecloth or pillowcase because it had just the right fabric? Pulled out a boot lace because you can't find the lacing you know you bought months ago? Scavenged something odd from the hardware store that worked perfectly or horribly? I want to hear about it.
21st-Nov-2009 01:33 am - Classic Underbust
I just finished this underbust lastnight for a friend of mine. She wanted something flattering and versatile that she could wear with pretty much any outfit. We decided on a nice heavy cotton fabric (looks like canvas but I'm not really sure exactly what material it is exactly). It's a 4 layer with mostly spiral steel boning and flats in the back and front.

I took a few construction pics but most came out a bit blurry. This is one of the better ones:

I found this picture on "What Not to Crochet" and I absolutly love it!! perfect for a college dorm right?

The only problem is that I do not have any idea where they are from, or if there is even a pattern for them!

20th-Nov-2009 02:53 pm - My first self-drafted under bust

20th-Nov-2009 12:04 pm - Corsetry FAQ - In Progress
I am working on assembling a corsetry FAQ for my web site, intended to include answers to questions that don't require an entire article of their own. So far the list is short, but I know there have to be a ton of short-answer questions out there. At the moment I am most interested in answering questions a customer might have, but I welcome any potential question remotely involving corsets, be they info a newbie would want, or more informative to someone with corset experience.

If it's a question I can't answer, or if the answer is too involved for the FAQ, I will still write it down for further research and a potential longer article later. I'm enjoying writing articles for Fashion Students Online and for my own web site, and as I write more articles I would like them to reflect information readers want and need.

I also just wrote an article on corset care and cleaning. Yesterday I received a few suggestions for things to add, and I was wondering if the community would be interested in a full post here after I have updated the article.

20th-Nov-2009 11:08 am - A money question...
The church I work at is having a tea and craft sale. Some of the older ladies make stuff to donate, we sell it and keep the money for the church. Anyway, one lady has donated a couple of amazing afghans. One is 72" x 72", in blue and grey, acrylic yarn. The other is 62" x 62" and is made from 100% cotton. Both are basically giant granny squares. We have *no* idea how much to ask for these. What do you all think?

EDIT: They decided to put them up for silent auction, with a starting bid of $35.

I'm tempted... I'm *so* tempted.
20th-Nov-2009 06:55 pm - Strange ridges of fabric...
Hello there everyone -

I've been nervous about posting with all the drama recently, but I am thoroughly bemused by some ridges/wrinkles on my recently finished corset for a friend. I have checked the memories but couldn't find anything. I have to say I also don't ever remember someone asking about something similar - mostly wrinkles come up in relation to satin/silk/taffeta and are all along the seams. This is the least wrinkly corset I've made so far in that respect.

Anyway, if anyone wouldn't mind having a look and un-bemusing me then that'd be great:-)

Hannah xx
