Thanks for looking!
Ok y'all... I have a hunch or two about what these stones are, but perhaps you can provide more insight?

Beautiful purple stones in here... )
Strange question, but since I've never felted I thought I'd ask. My mother-in-law bought two sweaters in Ireland that are wool. She wasn't thinking about it and washed them in hot water, might even have dried them. Since she couldn't wear them anymore she gave them to me.

How hopeless would it be to frog a sweater that's been lightly felted? One of them still has the yarn visible as yarn, it's just really fuzzy yarn. Would the yarn itself be so damaged or changed by the heat that it would be pointless to use even after I unraveled it? I'm a little afraid of the answer, but give it to me anyway.

The other one I don't think can be unraveled, it's a little too far gone I think. I'm thinking of felting that one all the way and cutting it up into panels to make a bag or something. I don't have a clue what to do with it other then that.

PS Is there anyway we can get a "felting" tag?
8th-Nov-2009 09:40 am - Baby Blanket
I finished a baby blanket for a friend of mine and I just love it. I've only ever done granny square blankets before so this was a new style of blanket for me. Two pictures )

Now I'm working on a little jacket in the same yarn for a different friend that is expecting too. That is, if I can get the gauge right. I've tried two different hooks so far and it's either way to big, or just a bit to small.

PS I'm xdragonladyx on Ravelry too
7th-Nov-2009 10:25 pm - Source for silk jersey?
I've done one corset where I covered the whole thing in a single panel of a rib knit cotton/lycra.  I want to do at least a sample where I use a finer fabric - silk jersey.  (Not as stretchy, so I know it'll at least need side seams, but same principle.)  I also want to start using it for other projects.

Anyway...  I hadn't realized how expensive this stuff is.  Retails easily for $30+/yard...  which makes it more than 3 times as expensive as dupioni.

Does anyone know of a good source for this stuff?  I'm in San Francisco but very comfy with internet shopping.  At this stage I probably just want a few yards each of basic colors, maybe only black and white to start with.  I didn't turn up anything with a cursory googling/ebaying (will keep looking), unlike my search for silk habotai (for example).

ETA: For that matter, does anyone have a good source for muslin?  I can get good muslin (nice hand, not off-grain) at Britex or Utrecht, but it's $3/yard.  Something more like $1-$2 for good muslin, purchased in bulk, would be nice.  There's ebay but I have no way of testing the hand and grain without seeing it in person, so let me know if you have any tried-and-true recommended sources, online or in the bay area.

Thanks in advance!

I am knitting a sweater from the charmed to knit book and i am having a problem with the center neck. The pattern is this:
K45 slip  last 16 sts worked onto stitch holder for center neck, k29. but my problem is that once you have 16 on your stitch holder how do you knit around it to knit the last 29 sts? any help would be wonderful, thank you!
8th-Nov-2009 09:49 am - Magnolia Afghan
Finished the magnolia afghan (a lionbrand pattern).... :)

The first pic is taken on my queen size bed, to show the size of the finished agfhan - it's actually going to be used as a blankie to snuggle under while watching tv in the lounge room :)

Colour is a bit off in this shot, but it shows the detail of the lace panel:

Voila.... in the lounge room...

7th-Nov-2009 01:28 pm - Question About Stitch Count
Okay, I feel like a dunce for asking this, but if a pattern starts out with "chain 27" for the first row and then "double crochet in 3rd chain from hook and in each chain of the foundation row" for the second row, how many double crochets should I have in that second row? I have 24 -- is that right?
7th-Nov-2009 08:39 am - First Serious Corset
So, have previously made corsets, but not nice ones (i.e. with proper coutil, steel bones, busk, etc.) So this is my first serious attempt.

OK, so, horrible picture of me, but hopefully a decent pictures of the corset! I bought the silk brocade facing at a Dark Garden sale, and really like the color. I wish that I'd gotten a bit more reduction out of it!  (I modified the Dore pattern to make it a bit smaller at the waist and breast, and a bit larger at the hip, but I'd STILL like more reduction!)  Even laced all the way, it started slipping just a touch after about an hour. Although it's fairly comfortable, so not a bad attempt, I think.  And the next one will be better.  ;)

More links to construction and other pictures on my blog (if anyone is interested/cares/really bored at work.)

7th-Nov-2009 10:33 am - check out this corsetiere!
A while back, I ordered a corset from Sweet Carousel. The idea was that I was going to replace my Puimond corset eventually (the magenta Asian brocade that I posted for sale a few weeks back, and is now on the way to Denmark). It is in the same silk brocade, but the pattern is a bit longer and has more of a sweetheart shape to the bust.

Well, after a few months, Elise from Sweet Carousel sent me a corset that is, frankly, one of the best-fitting corsets I've ever had the privilege of wearing. It is a standard sized corset, however it feels as though it was made exactly for my measurements all the way around in every way. The hips, the bust, the length (which is always a problem with me unless it's customized completely)- perfect. I have a high amount of squish, so I can lace down at least 8 inches. In this corset, it was smooth as butter in lacing down. I almost couldn't believe it. :D

I wore the beauty for two and a half hours around the house. Yay for comfort!

As of yet, I do not have photos. I tried taking some pictures, but they just didn't do it justice. I'll have to wait until I get back into town to photograph it well. :D
7th-Nov-2009 12:53 pm - Finished corset
Well, I finished my 'Silverado' corset ready for last weekend. I got quite a few comments on it, not least from a bunch of boys who don't quite get the whole corset thing and were just fixated on my chest the whole night. Heehee.

Anyway, this is the 2nd corset I've ever made - outer fabric is a really cheap satin brocade which I strengthened by ironing on interfacing before flatlining it to some heavy twill. Lining is herringbone coutil and it's got 26 flat steel bones in it.
I'm quite impressed by my putting in of the grommets but I managed to stuff up on the bust gore and couldn't work out how to fix it (4th picture) - any advice on how to sort it would be good since a few people have said that they want me to make one for them too and I want them to have nice corsets (so they really should commission someone else to make them!!!)

When it was properly laced it gave me quite a good shape - unfortunately in these pics I just put it on and didn't tighten so I could take some pics. Anyway... onto the pics

Pretty eye candy...of sorts! )
6th-Nov-2009 11:04 pm - you're gonna get sick of me...
Every so often, I start making different styles of jewelry. I was missing flowers this week (I'm in denial about it being November). I'm still working on my photography. I FINALLY got the pinkish hue out of my pictures.

6th-Nov-2009 09:45 pm - Any advice on how I would make this?
pictures under cut. Willow from Buffy as a vampire. )
Although it would be out of black coutil or something similar instead of leather, and the cups (which are also leather and not the same as the ruffles) would be double-layered coutil, or at least that's what I'm planning on.

Looks like it's pretty standard underbust with shoulder straps and cups added. What would be a good pattern to achieve this (or at least as a starting point...)?

I don't intend to make it with sleeves.
The ruffles at the chest are annoying and I don't think I'd reproduce them - instead replacing them with a bit of lace, probably.

There's some odd ridges in the cups you can see in the first picture... any idea what those might be, or are they just products of the creation of the corset?
How would I make those cups and attach them? I'm thinking a kidney-bean-like shape, and sewing them between the two strength layers...

This seems to require a busk.... damnit.
Yeah. Anyway, throw any and all of your thoughts at me!
I'm getting somewhere on the Shipwreck Shawl conversion! This is two rows into the Bleeding Heart chart.

Details, Q&A, a request for your input and kittycat pictures can be found on my journal.

6th-Nov-2009 05:44 pm - Dish Clothes again...
I asked awhile ago about cotton being the best material to use to make dishclothes. I went to a yarn store today, but they didn't have a very good selection of cotton, but the lady there told me that cotton is alittle soft to make kitchen dish clothes and recomended I use hemp yarn instead (depending on my budget). She had an example dishcloth made of hemp yarn and it was quite course to the touch. But my grandma always used cotton to make dishclothes.. so now I'm confused. The only cotton yarn I've been able to find so far are ones for making baby clothes, so they are almost a sport weight.

Basically I'm wondering if I should use cotton or hemp yarn to make dishclothes. (I plan to make a few sets for christmas gifts). If I chose the cotton, would the sport weight be ok?

Also, I'm curious what kind of stiches I should use. I tested one pattern I found that was basically single crochet, chain, single crochet, chain, ect, and the next row you single crochet into the chain space and so on. It made a very open weave cloth but at the same time its a nice thickness. The only thing that bugs me is that it stretches one way (up and down) and not so much side to side. I can't tell if it would be an actual annoyance, or if I'm just being silly. lol.

Any advice would be appreciated. :D

6th-Nov-2009 08:31 pm - finished corset pictures:
A cute overbust made for a friend. I'm wearing it in the picture and Im a good few inches smaller than her so it isnt looking so gorgeous, but I will put the pictures of her in it up when I have got some!

It is lined in black spot broche, has a piece of spiral boning on each seam and uses 5mm eyelets at the CB. I used a gold busk. The binding is bluey-turqoisey petersham ribbon, which is what I used for the boning casings as well.
EDIT: I sewed matching glass beads over some of the pattern on each piece, I think you can just about see it on here but if anyone wants a close up just ask =]

6th-Nov-2009 06:32 pm - Recent yarns - Using Stuff Up :)
hi all,

Have some new recent projects.
Having recently finished spinning an entire alpaca fleece, I felt like doing something different.

6th-Nov-2009 08:41 am - Not much going on.
I'm pretty sure I didn't respond to all the comments this morning about buying a Wii for Christmas, so I wanted to say that I really appreciate all the advice and I feel a lot better about going through with it.

I don't think I have anything else to talk about today. I have some cleaning up to do. I'm planning to make Spicy Cinnamon Chicken with rice for supper (crockpot), and I'd like to sew up two dresses and finish my lavender cardi.

I need to figure out when dolls B and I are taking tomorrow as we'll be leaving kind of early.

That's pretty much it for me today.
6th-Nov-2009 12:19 pm - Pullover
This pullover crocheted by me. I used 80% wood yarn. Though pullover is openwork it's very warming.

Pattern is aviable on russian, but I think it's understandable
